My first experience with the powerful influence of media came while working with the Cable News Network’s international bureau in Mexico City. I produced a story on the similarities between the circumstances of deaf-mute populations in Mexico City and New York City. When the story aired, our office was overwhelmed with calls from viewers who either did not realize the conditions in which the hearing and speech impaired were forced to live, or were grateful for our attention to the issue. I was touched by the fact that the story had appeal on an international level, and that it provided a venue for a, literally, voiceless people to ask for help. I knew at that moment that I had chosen the proper career path.
The story on deaf mutes taught me that without access to information, people live in a vacuum, where their experiences remain exclusive and isolated. I am looking forward to the opportunity to participate with the Blue Zones Quest to Costa Rica because the mission seeks to break through that vacuum by providing a venue that underscores the global nature of peoples' experiences. The pursuit of longevity is something that affects us all. Sharing the cultural, environmental, historical elements of the Nicoya people that contribute to a healthy lifestyle is a global treasure, beneficial to everyone. It’s a small world! Sharing knowledge cross-culturally is one of the ways we can learn from each other. The Blue Zone expedition is great way to introduce young people to the joys of diversity, wisdom and cooperation by giving them the wheel and letting the media work for them.
