Catholicism is the official religion of Costa Rica. Eighty-five percent of Costa Ricans consider themselves Catholic.

Most children in the region attend church on a regular basis, providing them an opportunity to form strong social connections.

People are eager to help carry the religious statue around town during the Procession of San Blas. Young men and women also help their elders during the procession.

Nearly all the elders of the community have a rosary and also dedicate part of their day to reading prayers.

The original church in Nicoya, built in 1644, was not capable of accommodating all the people attending the various Sunday functions. This newer, larger church lies just one block from the original church.

Belief in a higher being often gives a person a strong sense of purpose.

Younger members of the church are often taught about respect for their families, their church and their community through their religion.

Even Nicoyans of meager means build their own religious icons and adorn their homes with religious symbols.

Many people in this region relinquish much of their daily stress to God. By trusting that one will be protected by a higher power, one can live a life of lower stress.

Religious practice and faith may be elements that can lead to a longer life expectancy.
