Curanderos, the great medicine men and women of Costa Rica — revered for centuries for herbal cures that cure everything from poisonous snake bites to the common cold — have largely gone the way of coon-skin caps and bell bottoms: they’re gone, out of fashion. Now, most Costa Rican villages have modern clinics with well-trained doctors. The country’s excellent public health system, having successfully suppressed malaria, yellow fever and childhood diseases, explains much of Nicoya’s longevity.
