My first chance to feel
like a traveler was when Dan Buettner's Quest team came into my
classroom (via the Internet) when I was in high school. The team
traversed the hot sands of Africa on their bicycles while my friends
and I sat in our air conditioned class room and told them where to go.
When they found evidence of human origin or met people who gave them a
lead on where to go next, they depended on us, the students, to tell
them where to go. I was hooked.
When I finished high school,
I continued to follow the quests through the Amazon rainforest, Asia,
and the Galapagos Islands. A few years later I graduated from college
and began work toward my Ph.D. in Communication. For the last three
years, I have been in love up to my eyeballs. Literally. I have
dedicated my academic career to studying love and decency in
interpersonal relationships.
I believe the secret to a long and
healthy life is being a good and decent person, loving deeply, and
helping one another without expecting anything in return. I am often
inspired by kids because they seem much better than most adults at
getting lost in the beauty of a moment and loving others
unconditionally.
I'm excited that kids all over the world will
be directing my adventures as a part of the BlueZones team, just like I
directed the team when I was in high school. I hope you help me find
the secrets to living a very long time. Maybe, instead of growing old
and sitting on top of a mountain somewhere, I will be a professor in
front of a class full of students, whispering the secrets you helped me
discover!
Loving Living,
Rachel
