Day8

A portrait of Kame, 89, near the harbour where she harvests seaweed.

Kame, proud and shy at the same time, shows the double spread of National Geographic in which she is featured.

Kame shows our Videographer, Tom, how she picks seaweed.

Kame, sitting at her daughter's restaurant, shares some of her stories with us.

Almost every day, Kame goes to the senior center, a few blocks from her daughter's restaurant, to gather with friends and take part in fun activities.

She walks to the senior center for an afternoon of gym and Okinawan dancing. Research supports social networks and exercise as instrumental in successful aging.

Kame is gathering with her daugther and a friend for a Karaoke session.

Once a week, Kame Ogido, 89, gathers with friends to sing karaoke. Though karaoke is just one component of her ikigai (reason for getting up in the morning), she claims that spending time doing what she loves helps to keep her young.
