Independent fishermen meet their potential customers very early each morning.

Fisherman and Buyers

Okinawa still boasts a large fleet of ocean going ships that can travel great distances to bring fish to the Okinawan market. The Okinawan prefecture is 1000 kilometers by 400 kilometers in size.

Tuna is a large and highly prized fish. Each morning buyers must compete in an auction to make their purchase.

At the market, the fish's entrails and head are removed.

The competition for the best tuna is intense.

Umbrellas and aprons are helpful but not sufficient for staying dry in this very busy fish market.

Bargaining is a very intense activity at six in the morning.

Every fish at auction is tagged and labeled for identification.

Fish are moved manually under less than sterile conditions without health complications.
